This article, based on a lecture delivered to a symposium held in Leiden on the function and meaning of Buddhist art, appears in a book entitled Function and Meaning in Buddhist Art painting, edited by K.R. van Kooij and H. van der Veere. Gonda Indological Series, vol. 2 (Groningen: E. Forsten, 1995).
Tibetan art regularly functions as icon, intermediary between man and divinity. It subsists within a highly sophisticated liturgy designed to evoke a deity for purposes of worship and communication. But even iconic art is subject to the laws of social and political life; and every work of art functions and acrylic painting has meaning on many levels.
One facet of Tibetan iconic art is to be found in early portrait painting. Portraiture figured prominently in Tibetan art between ca. 1000 and 1400 A.D., and yet almost nothing is known about its functions and its significance.1 This essay addresses two main questions: What aesthetic and theoretical guides did artists observe in painting historical persons? And what social, political, and religious purposes did portraiture painting serve in pre-fifteenth century Tibet?

Some of Tibet's finest examples of early portraiture painting are still preserved at Alchi (al-chi), a monastic complex along the Indus River in Ladakh, founded around 1200 A.D.2 Alchi's two earliest structures, the Dukhang ('du-khang, "Assembly Hall") and the Sumtsek Lhakhang (gsum-brtsegs lha-khang, "Three-tiered Temple") both contain numerous examples of portraiture. A narrative along the east wall of the Assembly Hall features three figure painting: a man seated and holding a staff, a woman who faces him and offers a stemmed-cup, and a young man (an observation deduced from his size), presumably their son.3 (pl. 1)
Note that the two main figures are haloed, a phenomenon common in Tibetan depiction of royal, noble, and saintly persons. In this instance, the halos are likely to reflect both a pre-Buddhist Tibetan notion of divine kingship and the imported Indian notion of cakravartin, the divinely inspired ruler.4 An inscription below the scene positively identifies these figure painting as royalty, stating that the king and queen, having given royal sanction for the temple's construction, were refreshing themselves in the region.5 Their names and their precise dates

We know from textual and archaeological sources that painting was practiced in China from very early times and in a variety of media. Whole sale oil painting were produced in great numbers in the early period of China's history, but because so little early architecture in China remained intact over the centuries, few of these large-scale paintings have survived. Paintings were also often done on screens, which served in a sense as portable walls, but these too have not survived. From the Song dynasty onwards, paintings in a variety of other more portable formats, such as the hanging scroll and the handscroll, were collected and passed on to later generations in significant quantities. In their details of everyday life and social customs, these paintings often provide information unavailable from written texts. Many paintings are especially interesting to historians because they can help us imagine what life looked like in earlier periods. Furthermore, because paintings of this period have come to be viewed as one of the highest cultural achievements in China's history, they provide valuable insight into aesthetic values and tastes that would have lasting impact on later artists and connoisseurs.
In this unit we will look at two distinct aspects of painting during the Song and Yuan dynasties. Because many painters created highly detailed scenes of daily life, we can look at paintings for the information they provide about social life during this period. Painting as an art form also reached a very high standard of quality during the Song , which is considered by many to be a high point in the development of the fine arts in China. Landscape painting themes began to dominate painting during this period, and would continue to be a favorite subject of artists up into the modern period.

Arnosky has produced a valuable beginning drawing book. A simple flip through the pages shows many treasures that will inspire beginning students of drawing. No human Figure oil painting here, but rather the plants and animal oil painting and landscape oil painting of the forest and stream are what Arnosky offers. No other beginning drawing book is quite like this.
The author begins with illustrations that show how to draw WATER, including trout in a moving stream, submerged tree stumps, and even a bubble on the surface. This is followed with an assortment of water creatures. Still life painting Insects on the water surface, a duck, frog, snake, crayfish, and another fish amongst lily pads. This is very wonderful illustration.
Arnosky follows with a barrel serving as a water tank, illustrating dripping water from a faucet, distant hills and trees with a stream emerging with illustration of deep water and shallow water with a flock of geese nicely illustrated above. Seascape painting This kind of illustration repeats, showing how to draw rocks, trees (deciduous and pine) and waterfalls. Arnosky even shows how to draw small rocks and boulders, but also shows how to draw the shaped stones in arching bridges etc.
There are mountains with shading to illustrate light from different directions, and yet more birds painting, bushes, flower oil painting and fruits. This is an absolute encyclopedia of flora and fauna of all kinds. There are of course deer, bear, sheep, bunnies, bats and bobcats and so on.
There is quite a list of grasses, mushrooms, bushes, and even vines with the tiniest of delicately creeping and grasping tendrils. The love that author Jim Arnosky feels for his subjects gradually dawns upon the reader. Unframe painting This man's romance with nature passes quickly into the heart and mind of the reader. We also begin to feel Arnosky's wonder and awe at the ever-present surrounding beauty. Studying Arnosky's text the sensation becomes palpable, almost a religious sensation. The final dozen pages or so are lovely color photographs of nature.
DRAWING FROM NATURE is one of the most wonderful introductions to drawing plants, animals and landscapes that I've ever encountered. The author is worthy of respect as a teacher.

I mean the classical oil painting which does not only decorate the wall: it cuts it through and opens a three-dimensional space of associations. At the present time, despite the avalanche of new styles and schools, the classical oil painting continues to exist. Unfortunately, it is not taught anywhere, but many young artists feel the approach of the 21st century and are trying to do something by themselves.Renaissance is inevitable, the world culture has come to the critical point.
